If you do not already have a planned solution for providing remote instruction for Winter 2022 for the duration needed by the school please refer to our recommendations and options.
Recording or Streaming Lectures
Recording Software:
Zoom and GauchoCast are both great options for recording or streaming your lectures. If you are unfamiliar with these options please review our helpdesk article HERE.
Sharing Recordings:
- Livestreaming - Generally lectures are easiest livestreamed using a Zoom link shared with the class beforehand. This can be a re-occurring meeting, or a new meeting for each lecture. It is recommended that you record the Zoom meeting, and later share the recording with those who were unable to attend.
- Sharing Recordings - If you have enabled recording in Zoom, when your meeting has ended a video file of the meeting will be created (Details HERE). This file can be uploaded to Box, Google Drive, GuachoSpace, or any othered preferred sharing method. If you use GuachoCast/Ponopto the recording will be uploaded automatically. Please refer to our recording lectures article HERE for more information on this process.
Location Options:
Campus facilities will still be open for Faculty and Staff, this means you have additional locations / computing environments from which to record or stream your lecture.
- At Home - If you have taught remotely in a previous quarter that did not allow being on campus, this will be the most familiar for you. If you need help setting up software or require hardware such as a webcam or headset for your remote set up please contact the compute team with your needs by emailing compute@bren.ucsb.edu
- From Bren Office - Your Bren office may provide more comfort, better privacy, and a more stable internet connection to record or stream your lectures from. If you need help setting up software or require hardware such as a webcam or headset for your remote set up please contact the compute team with your needs by emailing compute@bren.ucsb.edu
- From Regularly Scheduled Classroom - You are welcome to use the classroom your class was normally scheduled to use during the time it was scheduled to take place. All Bren classrooms are equipped with the hardware (webcams) and software (Zoom, GuachoCast / Panopto) needed to record and upload lectures. The compute team will be available on-site if you would like help recording and uploading lectures.
Classes With GIS Computing Lab Component
If you are teaching a class that has instruction from a GIS computer or a lab that requires a student to use a GIS computer, this will be handled the same way it was handled during remote only instruction. Starting now, the GIS and SCF labs have been locked and are removed from general use. GIS computers will be reserved for students enrolled in classes with an active GIS lab component. Students will be able to remote desktop into a GIS computer reserved specifically for them during class hours.
If students require remote access to Bren lab computers outside of class times, there will be a general access SCF group they can connect to at any time. The Compute Team will be reaching to instructors / TA's teaching applicable courses with instructions and specific requests for additional information (class roster etc.)
Obtaining Help / Training
The Compute Team is here to help provide any hardware, software, training, or other resources you feel you will need to make remote classes successful. Please reach out to the compute team by emailing compute@bren.ucsb.edu and let us know how we can help.
The Bren Pinnacles Team (workgroup tasked with Fall 2020 remote instruction guidance) has also created extensive, helpful, targeted documentation on providing remote instruction. You can review this documentation HERE
