Have you ever been at home doing school work and realize that you need to access a file that’s on your Bren desktop? Before you hop on your bike to go to Bren, know that you can retrieve and work on your files from the comfort of your home, on your personal computer. Using FTP allows you to remotely access and edit files on your Bren desktop H: drive, as well as re-upload your edited files back to H: drive. This can easily be done using an FTP client.
1) Download FileZilla on your personal computer, or any other FTP client you prefer. (FileZilla is available for both Windows and MacOS. Other FTP clients include Cyberduck (Windows & Mac), WinSCP (Windows only), and Transmit (Mac only).) FileZilla will be used here for demonstration purposes.
2) Open FileZilla. At the top of the window, you will see text boxes for Host, Username, and Port. Input the following information:
Username: [your Bren username]
Password: [your Bren password]
Port: 23023 (this is the correct port, not 22 as shown below) And click ‘Quickconnect’
3) When you click ‘Quickconnect,’ you may see the following window pop up. Click ‘OK.’ If you don’t want to see this message every time, click the box for “Always trust this host, add this key to the cache'
4) Transfer files. You should now see all of your Bren files on the bottom right panel of the window. To copy files from the Bren server to the local drive on your computer or vice versa, simply drag and drop to your desired file destination.
