Over the years, there has trended a concept of BYOD, or bring your own device ( to work, to do work ). The Bren Compute team can provide advise and suggestions, and occasional help on issues related to your BYOD.
First, we recommend that you keep your operating system updated, that you run anti-virus/malware/ransomware software, and that you backup your computer.
Here is a note we received (sept 2016) about Anti-Virus software for personal devices by our campus security office:
In June, the Office of the CIO started offering Sophos, a cloud based antivirus solution, to all departments on campus as an option for protecting Mac and PC devices. Since then, several CSF members have asked if that offer extends to employees who use their personal computers for work purposes, or “bring your own device” (BYOD) employees.
At this time, the OCIO is not offering Sophos to BYOD employees nor can we support BYOD computers on Sophos consoles. BYOD employees will need to manage their own antivirus solutions as standalone deployments.
While the OCIO does not make any specific software recommendations to BYOD employees, we encourage them to seek out their own antivirus solution. Many free antivirus solutions are available to protect personal devices, including Sophos Home. Sophos Home provides the same level of protection as the version being offer to campus, packaged for home use.
Employees are encouraged to explore their options, and find the antivirus solution that suits their needs. For more information, consider reading The Best Free Antivirus Protection of 2016 in PC Magazine.
